Why are immigration evaluations useful?
- These written psychological assessments allow the immigration court and those involved in determining the outcomes of a case to better understand the mental health impacts, trauma history, family history, potential hardships, and the challenges encountered during the immigration process. It can be an effective way to bring information to the reviewers making life changing decisions regarding individuals and many times their family members.
How do immigration evaluations work?
- First, most likely your immigration lawyer recommended an evaluation.
- Payment, initial paperwork and any questions or concerns will be addressed.
- Once you are accepted as a client, the first appointment will be scheduled.
- Translation services will be arranged if not speaking English or Spanish (this is an extra cost).
- Typically, it involves meeting two times virtually for about an hour each session. You will be asked questions in a direct but compassionate manner. It may be emotional and overwhelming which is why the task is broken up into two sessions.
- The written report will be provided to you and to your lawyer in a mutually agreed upon timeline and mode (ex: secure email, mail).
- Expedited reports available upon request for an extra fee.
How do I know if I need an immigration evaluation?
- Please consult your lawyer prior to seeking out an evaluation on your own. Most likely, you already work with an immigration lawyer and they have advised you to seek an evaluation for your case.
